Landscape Features, Human Disturbance or Prey Availability? What Shapes the Distribution of Large Carnivores in Europe?

چکیده

Knowledge concerning the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors associated with long-term settlement large carnivores in human-dominated landscapes is important for effective species conservation. However, identifying major drivers carnivore occurrences at a continental scale challenging as several can act concert to affect distributions. Thus, we investigated relationship between permanent sporadic (brown bear, Eurasian lynx, grey wolf wolverine) three groups predictor variables (i.e., landscape attributes, human disturbance prey availability) on Europe. Specifically, used generalized linear models (GLMs) variation partitioning estimate independent cumulative effects occurrences. The explained variance vs. occurrence was highest wolverine (42.8% 29.7%), followed by brown bear (20.5% 16.4%), lynx (15.2% 11.6%) (15.8% 6.1%). Landscape such forest cover, shrub-land altitude slope, were positively related wolf, whereas (human population density, distance roads settlements) negatively occurrence. For all species, shared attributes accounted considerable portion both occurrence, generally more explaining than except wolverine. Prey availability marginally but found no statistical effect other carnivores. In conclusion, Europe stochastic less predictable their joint are most recolonization dynamics carnivores, although distributions appear strongly limited itself. Domestic seems play subordinate role driving recent distribution scale. our results relevant also light ongoing which, many rural areas, caused concerns among locals, especially relation conflicts activities. these reasons, stress need continue improve monitoring across

Sabretoothed Carnivores and the Killing of Large Prey

Sabre-like canines clearly have the potential to inflict grievous wounds leading to massive blood loss and rapid death. Hypotheses concerning sabretooth killing modes include attack to soft parts such as the belly or throat, where biting deep is essential to generate strikes reaching major blood vessels. Sabretoothed carnivorans are widely interpreted as hunters of larger and more powerful prey...

Prey depletion as a threat to the world's large carnivores

Large terrestrial carnivores are an ecologically important, charismatic and highly endangered group of species. Here, we assess the importance of prey depletion as a driver of large carnivore endangerment globally using lists of prey species for each large carnivore compiled from the literature. We consider spatial variation in prey endangerment, changes in endangerment over time and the causes...

Big Cats in Our Backyards: Persistence of Large Carnivores in a Human Dominated Landscape in India

Protected areas are extremely important for the long term viability of biodiversity in a densely populated country like India where land is a scarce resource. However, protected areas cover only 5% of the land area in India and in the case of large carnivores that range widely, human use landscapes will function as important habitats required for gene flow to occur between protected areas. In t...

Influence of Connectivity, Wild Prey and Disturbance on Occupancy of Tigers in the Human-Dominated Western Terai Arc Landscape

Occupying only 7% of their historical range and confined to forested habitats interspersed in a matrix of human dominated landscapes, tigers (Panthera tigris) typify the problems faced by most large carnivores worldwide. With heads of governments of tiger range countries pledging to reverse the extinction process and setting a goal of doubling wild tiger numbers by 2022, achieving this target w...

Landscape and Regional Environmental Analysis of the Spatial Distribution of Hantavirus Human Cases in Europe

BACKGROUND In Europe, the most prevalent hantavirus, Puumala virus, is transmitted by bank voles and causes nephropathia epidemica in human. The European spatial distribution of nephropathia epidemica is investigated here for the first time with a rich set of environmental variables. METHODS The influence of variables at the landscape and regional level is studied through multilevel logistic ...
